Dropped VoIP Calls
Calls that cut out mid-conversation point to your network, not your phones.
Dropped calls on a VoIP system are frustrating and usually stem from your internet connection or local network struggling to keep a steady voice stream alive β not a defect in the phones themselves.
Likely causes
Ranked from most to least common based on what we see in the field.
- ISP or SIP trunk outage or instability
- QoS misconfiguration or bandwidth contention
- SIP registration expiring mid-call due to timer mismatches
- NAT/SIP ALG interference dropping the session
- Firewall RTP asymmetry timing out the call
- Failed or overloaded trunk hardware
- Wi-Fi interference for cordless or softphone users
What you can check first
Safe steps that take a few minutes and can save a truck roll.
- Note the time of day drops happen β often correlates with peak internet usage
- Check if drops happen on wired handsets, Wi-Fi, or both
- Confirm no large downloads/backups are running during business hours
- Check your ISP's status page for reported instability
- Try a wired handset if drops are isolated to Wi-Fi/softphone users
How we diagnose it
We monitor call quality metrics (jitter, packet loss, latency) alongside your network's bandwidth usage to pinpoint whether drops correlate with congestion, a carrier issue, or a specific device.
Fixing it
Depending on the cause, the fix ranges from QoS and VLAN configuration to bandwidth upgrades or carrier escalation. We tune SIP timers and firewall settings so sessions stay alive under real-world network conditions.
- QoS and bandwidth prioritization for voice traffic
- SIP trunk and gateway timer tuning
- Bandwidth assessment and ISP escalation
- Wi-Fi survey for cordless and softphone reliability
Frequently asked
Could our internet plan just not be fast enough?+
It's possible β VoIP needs relatively little bandwidth per call but is very sensitive to jitter and packet loss, which cheaper or congested connections often have.
Are dropped calls always a network problem?+
Usually, yes, but a failing trunk card or overloaded PBX can also cause drops. We check both before recommending network changes.
Can this happen with a cloud VoIP provider too?+
Yes β the provider's platform may be fine, but if your local network or ISP connection is unstable, calls will still drop.
