Nearly every recurring voice and network complaint we investigate in NYC traces back to cabling that was rushed. Good structured cabling is boring, documented, and tested.
Choosing a category
- Cat6 — 1 Gbps at full length, 10 Gbps to ~55 m. The right default for most offices.
- Cat6A — 10 Gbps to 100 m, better PoE heat performance. Worth it for long runs, high-density APs, and future-proofing.
- Fiber — for floor-to-floor backbone and runs beyond 100 m.
Counting drops
Two drops per desk, plus dedicated drops for each access point, printer, camera, door reader, conference display, and the reception desk. Adding one extra drop during install is cheap; pulling one later means a ceiling crew and a change order.
PoE and heat
PoE+ and PoE++ devices heat bundled cable. Keep bundles under 24 cables, avoid tight cinching, and size your switch power budget with 25% headroom so a future AP or camera does not knock phones offline.
Code in older buildings
Plenum (CMP) jacket is required where cable shares an air-handling ceiling; riser (CMR) is required for vertical runs between floors. Firestop every penetration. Landmark and pre-war buildings often require surface raceway where core drilling is restricted — confirm with building management before scheduling.
The telecom closet
Terminate to a patch panel, never straight to switch ports. Label both ends of every run, use horizontal cable management, and leave a service loop. A dressed rack turns a two-hour fault into a five-minute one.
Certification testing
Ask for a certification report per drop — wiremap, length, insertion loss, NEXT, and return loss. Keep the PDF with your floor plan. Without test results you have no way to prove a bad run when a phone starts dropping calls next year.
